Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was ā€œpositiveā€ during a recent discussion.

ā€œThat’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,ā€ Glenn stated on Wednesday. ā€œHis family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.ā€

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

ā€œStill unsure,ā€ he added. ā€œBut I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.ā€

Authorities issued video stills Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind ā€œa tonā€ since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.

ā€œWhat immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,ā€ Glenn said. ā€œAnd I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
ā€œThere is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.ā€

Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was projected as an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.

ā€œHe’s been a part of what we’re doing,ā€ Glenn stated. ā€œCertainly, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.ā€

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
