McLaren Formula 1 executives Brown and Andrea Stella pointed to opposing racers for the incident between Piastri and Norris at the beginning of the US GP sprint race. The Australian driver, leading Norris in the standings by twenty-two points, bounced into his team-mate after hitting Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg. The collision eliminated both McLaren drivers out of the race, along with the Fernando Alonso, who was on the inner side of the Sauber driver. McLaren Leaders Express Disappointment Over Incident Zak Brown, the team's CEO, stated to broadcasters that some of the racing at the front was "inexperienced", adding: "Clearly Nico drove into Piastri and he had no reason being where he was." The team team principal Stella added: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we were denied the chance to race." "It is unexpected that some racers with a lot of experience don't act with justful prudence. Go to the first corner, make sure you avoid harming competitors and carry on." McLaren clarified that the team principal was pointing to both the Sauber driver and the Aston Martin driver. Differing Perspectives on the Crash However, former champion Hill, providing analysis for a sports broadcast, said he thought the Australian had not shown enough awareness of the risks of the opening turn of an F1 race when he decided to move inside to try to overtake his teammate. Piastri had a better start than the Briton and initially competed on the outer side on the uphill entry to the corner. But he then cut back in an effort to get a run on his teammate on the way out, only to collide with the Sauber driver. Racer Comments After the Incident Piastri said: "Less than perfect but I did not see what occurred, I attempted to move inside on Norris and we were both quite distant from the apex and then got a hit and it sent me into Lando. A shame." His teammate said: "I just got hit, right? I was not at fault. Behind us events unfolded and I just was unfortunate and got hit because of it. I am unsure. I need to look a bit more carefully. It's more drivers behind just being a bit reckless and we are the consequence of that." The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I believed I was in the right place on the inside, but some vehicles came very fast from the outer side switching back and then I was there in the middle." Hulkenberg, who had earned a best qualifying fourth, said: "Major disappointment. All the good work from yesterday in the bin. Just chaotic." "Oscar turned in pretty aggressively trying to get the inside line and way out of Turn One but I can't just disappear." "I had Alonso challenge on the inside and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to leave space for him and then Piastri steered inward and the contact was unavoidable." Post-Crash and Team Response The team will analyze the incident with their racers but not until the event weekend. Both vehicles needed significant repairs before qualifying session at 22:00 BST on the weekend. Stella said: "Overall displeased but we take it on the chin, we are now concentrating on repairing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the event from there." "We are in a strong position from our competitiveness point of view so I trust we have the possibility to race, compete fairly and utilize our performance." "The points are the key thing, I don't want to talk about bad intentions, just prudence. A little more care would be good for all involved." Championship Implications The race was taken by Red Bull's Verstappen, who closed in on both McLaren drivers in the championship - he is now fifty-five points behind Piastri and thirty-three behind of Norris. Stella said: "The implication is what the numbers show - we missed out on eight championship points with both drivers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a highly capable vehicle and two skilled drivers. We look forward to just some normal racing." Verstappen said he was taking the championship race by race.
