The Academy Awards will begin airing only on the global video platform in 2029, representing the latest significant change in the film industry.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made the announcement on this week, indicating that it entered into a long-term agreement awarding the streaming service the exclusive global rights to the Oscars through 2033.

The Oscars, set for 15 March, has aired for 50 years on the traditional network. Starting in 2029, the show will be viewable as a free live stream on YouTube.

This is another major shakeup in Hollywood, which is navigating company buyouts and fusions, along with steep reductions in filming.

"The Academy is an worldwide body, and this partnership will allow us to increase availability to the activities of the Academy to the biggest global viewership attainable - which will be beneficial for our film artists and the film community," stated organization heads in a release.

Over decades, ratings of the awards show have dropped, though there was a minor increase in 2025, with a considerable amount of Gen Z and millennial watchers tuning in from smartphones and laptops.

In a related comment, the head of YouTube called the Oscars "one of our vital pillars of culture" and noted that teaming up with the Academy would "spark a new generation of innovation and movie fans while remaining faithful to the Oscars' celebrated legacy".

ABC, which has streamed the ceremony since the mid-1970s, commented that it was eagerly anticipating "to the next three telecasts" it will continue to air.

This decision comes as large entertainment companies confront challenging merger discussions. Both options were seen as unfavourable for an industry that has experienced significant downsizing over the recent period.

Similar to big production houses, cable networks have encountered challenges as the viewers has shifted towards streaming services instead.

The platform securing rights to the Academy Awards strongly indicates that reliance on online services will continue to grow.
