Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.” As the debut season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus. On the Incredible Fan Response It would be easy to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and fan theories about Pluribus. He is doing his best to steer clear of all that. “It feels like an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.” In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show. “We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.” “Better to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in. The Big Question: Will the showrunner See the Ending of Pluribus? Given that the writers are not listening by public opinion, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… with some caveats. “There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a decent plan for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.” Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort. “My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.” Of course, one could always use the iconic TV endings? “I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes. Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
