The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
