Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these drugs should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural support.
