Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
