Young Australian Charged for Allegedly Placing Googly Eyes on ‘Blue Blob’ Artwork

The local council stated they could not take off the eyes without harming the artwork.

A young person from the Land Down Under has appeared in court after allegedly defacing a sizable blue sculpture of a mythical creature by affixing googly eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated remotely at the local court in South Australia on that day, facing with a single charge of property damage.

Officials commented at the time of the recent event, the local council said that surveillance video captured a individual putting artificial eyes on the sculpture, which locals have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.

Ms Vanderhorst made no plea and informed the judge she was ill, as reported by media sources, with the judge advising her to find a legal representative before her upcoming hearing in the final month of the year.

The damaged sculpture following the stickers were removed.

The following day the reported event, the city leader said that restoration to the popular public artwork would be expensive as the adhesive eyes were impossible to be detached without harming the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a cherished public artwork is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor said in September. “It is not harmless fun, it is pricey - it is also disappointing to those members of our society who have embraced the Blue Blob.”

She said the council would pursue the “significant” restoration expenses from those responsible for the damage.

When the sculpture was first proposed, it drew varied responses from the area residents due to its price tag and appearance.

Costing 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the sculpture represents a legendary giant animal, with the creators inspired by an ancient anteater-like marsupial discovered in nearby caverns that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.
